The Hinterlands of Our Memories

Overview

A road movie traveling from Rio de Janeiro to the "sertão" (backlands) of Bahia. With the help of three survivors, the film revisits a 1971 massacre that took place under the military dictatorship. The attack claimed the lives of Captain Carlos Lamarca—the regime's public enemy number one—and José Campos Barreto ("Zequinha"), a community leader and former organizer of one of the few workers' strikes following the military coup. After years of fear and oblivion, the towns where the tragedy occurred now honor both men.
