The Long Arm was set in both Melbourne and Sydney and as well as its episodes being based on real-life cases, attempted to introduce a soap opera feel by examining the private lives of the detectives. Nineteen episodes were produced. The Long Arm was also the name of an unrelated 1956 film starring Jack Hawkins.
